The Movie Timeline - of all the movie timelines on all the net, you walked into this one

..............T H E   M O V I E   T I M E L I N E..............

BREAKING NEWS! The new Movie Timeline podcast is now officially launched - it's called Movie Banter and also encompasses our sister sites ruinedendings.com and moviemistakes.com. It's simply myself and Jon Sandys of moviemistakes.com reviewing, previewing and generally arguing about current film releases. Listen here. This week: Quantum of Solace, Saw V, Max Payne, and others.

Keep your submissions for the Timeline coming! Lots of new films out now to add, so please add some dates when you come back from your multiplex these coming months... If you're new to the site, The Movie Timeline is the history of everything, taken from one simple premise: that everything you see in the movies is true - the real mixes with the fictitious, so long as it's reported in a movie somewhere...

Welcome to a self-confessed complete waste of time. I know this. The internet is an incredible tool that can be harnessed to create wonderful advancements for mankind if everyone pulls together. But until that day, here's a bunch of pointless movie trivia, arranged in the form of an over-long fake chronology. So jump on in - the time-wasting's lovely.

It's a mammoth task only limited by the history of cinema, and so your help will be invaluable in making this probably quite pointless but joyously trivial timeline complete. You can reach me with comments by clicking Submit and leaving the film name and details blank - just put your message in the main submissions box.

Today in movie history...

1804: 23rd November: Franklin Pierce is born. (Hillsborough, New Hampshire - Great Moment, The )

1874: 23rd November: Hilda Bouverie kicks off her triumphant European tour singing "Lucia di Lammermoor" at the Teatro del Corso. (Bologna, Italy - Stingeree)

2055: 23rd November: Travis Ryer's prehistoric time-travelling safari team barely return from the past when his gun jams directly in front of a dinosaur. (A Sound of Thunder)

NEW(ish) UPDATES! Now on the site you can search/browse by film, alphabetical list, or by event (day/month). If you're submitting, please check if we've got the event/date you're submitting by checking there first. You can see what movie event was happening on your birthday, or on today's date as listed above. We're also well up-to-date with current releases - we've fitted films such as the following into their chronological place...

Quantum of Solace
The Changeling
Burn After Reading
Eagle Eye
Iron Man
Hellboy II: The Golden Army
Blindness
The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford
The Brothers Solomon
There Will Be Blood
Leatherheads
The Other Boleyn Girl
21
The Dark Knight
...as well as many others.

You can also explore the dates on the left-hand bar to see discover...

When Harry Met Sally - that'll be 1977.
The Day The Bubble Burst - it was a Tuesday.
The Day The Earth Stood Still - that was a Wednesday.
Employee of the Month - that month was November 2006.
Hogwarts was founded just 61 years after King Arthur sought the Holy Grail by storming a castle with a large wooden rabbit.

Plus the coincidences, for instance...

- Gangs of New York's Amsterdam Vallon was killing Butcher Bill, down the road Abraham Lincoln was being kidnapped by Bill & Ted...
- Lucky Al Capone - he was sent to Alcatraz by Eliot Ness just in time to miss King Kong rampaging around New York...
- Andy Dufresne was wrongly sentenced to Shawshank a few short months before someone else was framed - Roger Rabbit...

Submit your own historical event from a movie (not TV - yet) by clicking here. It can be a real event (eg. the sinking of the Titanic) or a far-from-real event (eg. Marty McFly attending his parents' school dance) - so long as it's found in a film. It must be a verifiable date - whether a year subtitled at the start ("1941, France..."), a visible clue in the film (character picks up a newspaper), or some historical backdrop (From Hell's Jack The Ripper). If you know what year a movie is set in, let me know.

Thanks for linking to us and please continue to plug us on your journeys round the net. For now please ignore the crappy straightforward appearance - explore the information and trivia, have some fun with it - it really is a very simple idea. But it needs your help!

Right. All dates must be at least a specific year, if not a month or date. The only exceptions are the first few dates, cos we got to include them... - so let fake-history commenceth:

In the beginning... God created the heavens and the earth (The Bible)

Shortly after the beginning... God subcontracts the fjords to Slartibartfast, a planetary construction engineer from Magrathea (The Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy)

26,000,000,000BC Los Angeles (and everywhere else) - The Earth's crust begins to harden (Adaptation)

A long time ago... Luke Skywalker and Han Solo lead a rebellion against the evil empire(Star Wars)

1 zillion BC October 9: Cavemen discover fire, and the joys of eating dinosaur egg (Caveman, 1981)

From this point on the dates get more sensible - begin the timeline...
